Reaching 40k+ users for a SaaS with 1,400,000+/mo in non-branded traffic

The client is a powerful tool for customer-facing teams that provides real-time suggestions to help compose personalized responses faster and more efficiently. It seamlessly integrates with CRMs and messaging platforms to help streamline the customer interaction process.

The numbers in a nutshell:

  • May 2022: 22,324/mo in organic traffic

  • Jan 2024: 1,467,989/mo in organic traffic, AND:

    • A growing user base of over 40,000 customers

    • 6500% increase in traffic

    • 115% increase in MRR

The problem: No SEO strategy in place

When you type in your brand name in Google, you’re likely to appear in the search results. This is known as branded traffic. But unless you’re Apple or Nike, no one’s really searching your brand.

This is why non-branded traffic is so important. It’s the stuff people who are likely to be interested in your tool are searching on Google. And client needed to rank for those non-branded keywords.

Here’s what we’d do:

The fix: High-level keyword research & SEO-optimized content

We compiled user queries related to the client’s services and created a list of keyword permutations that are easy to scale.

From there, we focused on four major kinds of queries to catch users' attention and boost Sapling's visibility on Google's algorithm:

  • Focus on What Makes Them Buy (Bottom of the Funnel, BOFU): First things first, we're zooming in on the content that helps people decide to choose the client’s product. Product comparisons, listicles, etc. Through copy and design, our landing pages turn visits into sales.

  • Help Them Learn and Trust Us (Middle of the Funnel, MOFU): This is where our blog posts and educational articles come in. We're not just throwing in keywords we found online. Our team digs deeper, using our industry knowledge and a mix of tools to create content that answers real questions and builds trust. We're guiding our readers smoothly from just looking around to thinking, "Hey, this might be what I need."

  • Getting Them Interested (Top of the Funnel, TOFU): At the broadest level, we're all about sparking interest. This is the fun part where we talk about industry trends, give tips, and share insights. We do use SEMrush for some neat keyword ideas, but it's our creative process and understanding of what’s trending that really makes this content shine.

    • Product-led content throughout the funnel: When creating TOFU content, don’t be afraid to strategically place product CTAs where they might make sense.

Here was the traffic for one of the response template pages in May 2022 (when we started):

(The page in question)

In April 2023, this page generates almost 4,000/mo in organic traffic alone:

  • Lastly, programmatic SEO queries: Programmatic SEO is a strategy that uses automation to create and optimize website content with the goal of improving its search engine ranking. While this was done in-house by client, TalktheTalk advised them to target questions customer-facing teams are likely to ask when serving customers from around the world. For example, “this vs that” vocabulary queries like “tons vs tonnes” are helpful for customer support teams who want to get regional spelling right. Client used this advice to create pages that automatically generate information based on user queries. These pages not only provide useful information for users but also help boost Client's visibility and ranking on search engine result pages.

The “tons vs tonnes” query alone brings over 5500/mo in organic traffic:

And of course, it was imperative that Client’s solutions were mentioned:

Now imagine this done for dozens of relevant queries 📈📈📈

The results – Over 1,000,000+/mo in worldwide organic traffic & 40k+ users

The results speak for themselves. In May 2022, organic traffic was minimal (below 2000/mo):

Now, in April 2023, they rake in over 1,000,000/mo in worldwide organic traffic, 330k/mo of which comes from the United States (as seen in the left table in screenshot below).

Key takeaways

  • A comprehensive SEO strategy is necessary for everyone: Without a proper SEO strategy, businesses can struggle with sluggish traffic growth. That's why it's essential to write down the topics, queries, and keywords you want to target before producing any content. Content planning helps shape your content and improves your chances of ranking.

  • The key to success is targeting the right queries: List out all the content opportunities with a competitor analysis. Then order them from BOFU to TOFU. Create a content calendar from there.

  • Programmatic SEO is an effective strategy: Although a new concept in SEO, programmatic SEO can improve your site's ranking and traffic significantly. However, bad execution of this strategy can hurt your ranking, as Google doesn't like AI-generated content. But with proper execution, it can be a powerful tool to climb the ranks. At TalktheTalk, we helped client target queries like "tons vs. tonnes" to generate useful information pages on when and where to use each variant.
